Councils should make grit available to home and business owners – Troy

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, Tourism and Sport Robert Troy TD has called on Local Authorities to open up their stockpile of grit to home and business owners during the exceptional cold spell of weather.

Deputy Troy said, “Local Authorities are flat out trying to clear snow from roads and footpaths and keep transport moving around the country. Workers on the frontline are to be commended for the work that they are doing during this exceptional weather.

“Local Authority staff alone cannot spread grit to all areas that need it considering the amount of snowfall that has fallen so far and the forecasts for the days ahead. Accordingly Local Authorities should open up their stockpiles of grit to home and business owners to enable them to spread grit in and around their own premises. Where possible this girt should be left at the entrance of housing estates to help keep roads clear.

“Local Authorities should also be facilitated in engaging with private contractors when needed to help keep roads and footpaths accessible. We are experiencing an exceptional period of poor weather which calls for an exceptional response from Government and Local Authorities.”
